The Supreme Court ruled against “affirmative action” in college admissions. Don’t get too excited about it.

Yes, it’s a momentous decision that came down today from the Supreme Court.  In a 6-3 decision, the Justices said that colleges, both public and private, may not use an applicant’s race in deciding whether to admit him or her.  The rulings covered one public college, the University of North Carolina, and one Ivy League institution, Harvard.  The usual suspects dissented (Kagan, Sotomayor, and Jackson, two of whom were affirmative action hires!).  As expected, the Left blew up, melted down, and spewed the usual claptrap about how “minorities” can’t get ahead in life without a thumb on the scale.

But don’t get too excited, since it is well-known that the Left never gives up its pursuit of absolute equality of outcome.  More than one pundit has opined that colleges will simply ignore this ruling, and find all sorts of ways around it by considering characteristics that might be proxies for race, like ZIP code, name (yes, Asians have Asian names, and many black parents name their kids made-up names that sound African), or high school attended.  College admissions policies are deliberately opaque, ensuring that it will be difficult for anyone denied admission to prove that race was the reason.

Seeing what has happened in the aftermath of the Dobbs decision that overthrew the “right” to abortion on a federal level (judges all over the country have overruled legislatures who restrict abortion in states, ensuring that the case will end up back before the Supreme Court before long), it is nearly certain that further lawsuits will be filed in the future, as Leftist colleges assert their power of decision as to who is admitted.

So rejoice that the Supreme Court did the right thing, but be prepared for further uproar from the Left.

I imagine, however, that Martin Luther King Jr is smiling down from heaven today.
