Once again, the young leftists writing the news stories in the Journal just have to get in a dig at America. In an article about the riots in France, brought about “After Police Kill Teenager” (get the headline-you have to read more to know that the teenager in question fled from a traffic stop), they just couldn’t help themselves. This is the final paragraph in the story from June 29.
Despite the criticism, French police kill far fewer people than their counterparts in the US. The French national police and the gendarmes, which police rural areas, killed 26 people in 2019, according to BastaMag, a French media organization. U.S. police forces killed 1,098 people in that year, according to Mapping Police Violence, a group that tracks police killings.
Now, tell me what possible relevance does that paragraph have to the original story? Does it matter one tiny bit how many people are killed by police in America? No, it does not. And the editors of the Journal swear that there is no opinion in their news reporting. Yeah, right.
Here’s the real significance of the American statistics provided to give essential context to the French citizens in order that no one can claim the article hasn’t been fact checked: We know France doesn’t want things to be like they are in the US. France death statistics are not what they are in the US. So France is not the US. Things aren’t that bad. Get over it, France. Check back in a year to see if things are better or worse.
