Thanksgiving isn’t just for the Humans…Birds get some too

At least, in our backyard they do.  On Thursday, while waiting for our roast to cook, I sat at the kitchen table and watched our feathered friends in the yard.  We had both kinds of Chickadees (Black-capped and Chestnut-backed), Red-shafted Flickers, Juncos, Varied Thrushes, and Song Sparrows.

The Flickers are very skittish, and fly away at any indication of movement from inside the house, but while I was seated at the table, I captured some excellent shots of our birds at the two suet feeders.

TwoFlickers

Here are two of the three Flickers.  The one on the cage suet feeder is the female, and you can just see her red mustache through the cage.  On the ground is a juvenile, and you can see it does not have the red mustache yet.  He is watching Mom closely, learning her technique for approaching the suet.

YoungFlicker-Suet

And here he is, demonstrating that he las learned from Mama.

YoungFlicker-RedTail

Here, you can see the red feathers on the underside of his tail, marking him as a Red-Shafted Flicker.  They have to be pretty athletic to get at that suet!

That kid really knows how to pose for the camera!

Thrush-Junco-Flicker

Here, I captured three different birds at once!  Varied Thrush, Junco, and Flicker.

Chestnut-backed Chickadee

And there’s the Chestnut-backed Chickadee on the other suet feeder.  This is the one with the tail-rest for the flickers, but they were ignoring it for the hot-pepper suet, which is their favorite kind.  I just love watching our backyard birds.
