Vegetables can be beautiful

Yes, you heard that right. Vegetables can actually be beautiful, regardless of how they might taste. Yesterday, Hubby and I went to our favorite Asian market, Uwajimaya. They have a remarkable assortment of Asian foods, fruits, vegetables, meats, and other prepared foods. I have always marveled at the arrays of items in their produce department. Now, it’s Lunar New Year time, and their store is decorated appropriately for the occasion.

How about that dragon suspended above the shoppers!

This guy seems to be guarding a tower of special Sake. He can’t be too dangerous, if people are grabbing bottles off his stack!

On the left is “baby taro”, and on the right are Japanese Mountain Yams. Not terribly appetizing to my Western tastes, but interesting to look at.

Those chili peppers add big spots of color. Just look at the price of the red ones! They must be pretty rare, and hot.

Garlic and Shallots are very versatile ingredients, and they are always fresh at this store.

The baby Bok Choy cabbage looks pretty appetizing, just the thing for your stir-fry dish.

Do you know what this is? It’s Sugar Cane! Did you know that wars have been fought over this commodity? It was once very rare and expensive, grown on huge plantations in the Caribbean. The French, Spanish, and English competed over access to the growing areas, and that competition became deadly in the fights over slavery on the plantations.

I don’t recall having seen chestnuts there before, but here they are.

Now, for some fun! I just had to laugh when I saw these on the shelf. The brand is Demon Slayer!

Being an anime fan, these colorful cans just jumped out at me. Cute!
