They’ve Got Us Right Where They Want Us (with thanks to a Ricochet friend for the idea)

Isolated from friends and family.

Schools closed, so our children cannot see or play with their friends; in fact, being taught to fear their friends.

Churches closed. Movie theaters, retail shops, bars and restaurants closed (these are all the places where we socialize together).

Stuck at home. Working from home, distant from colleagues and supervisors

Jobs lost, so people lose their sense of purpose in life.

Information about the disease itself, and about how individuals should respond to it, inconsistent and unreliable.

Government so-called “experts”, giving contradictory advice on a daily basis.  University computer “modelers” predicting apocalypse regularly, but changing the parameters so nothing is ever constant.

Elderly people in congregate-care facilities even more isolated, forbidden to see their own families, dying alone and in despair.

People required to wear a mask over their face, the one feature of the body that makes a person human.  Unseen: smiles of satisfaction, frowns of concern, kids’ tongues sticking out at their friends’ good-natured teasing.  Seen: lineups outside stores, dozens of people with no faces, just blank masks, Six Feet Apart

Lineup-masks

Citizens encouraged by Governments to inform on neighbors and strangers; asked to turn in their neighbors for violations of mask-wearing and physical-distancing guidelines.  Re-creating the East German Stasi secret police in the United States of America.

And to add insult to injury, Summer Events that define the Summer season are cancelled.  July 4 festivities everywhere are cancelled; the Bellevue Arts & Crafts Fair is cancelled; the Seattle Chamber Music Festival concerts are cancelled in person-online just isn’t the same.  Not only do you have to go around wearing a mask, all of your social events are cancelled.  This is criminal, and very depressing to the populace.

They’ve got us right where they want us.  Cowed, afraid of our friends, neighbors, and coworkers.  Looking over our shoulders whenever we are away from home, watching everywhere for the snitches, just ready to call the enforcers to slap us with misdemeanor charges for refusing to hide behind the mask.  And if, as expected, the promised Wuhan Coronavirus Vaccine does NOT make its appearance any time soon, this state of affairs will be UNENDING.

They are Destroying American Society, with malice aforethought.  Be very careful of complying with every government “guideline”-they are leading you to disaster.

Are you ready to cower forever, afraid of an unseen virus that 96% of us, even if we get sick, will survive?  Not I, said the Patriot.

What now for the performing arts?

What now for the performing arts?

Due to Government Edicts all over the United States and the entire world, performing arts organizations have essentially been prevented from staging their symphony concerts, big-band jazz concerts, chamber music performances, choral concerts, and even rock concerts, due to fears of spreading the Wuhan Coronavirus.  They range from world-class orchestras like the Seattle Symphony, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, to stage plays on Broadway, to the Seattle Chamber Music Festival, the Northwest Chamber Chorus, and Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra.  Smaller groups have smaller cash cushions to get them through half a season with no presentations.  Groups have had to cancel needed fund-raising events like dinners and auctions, further reducing their available funds.

Many orchestras, especially the large ones like New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia, have audiences that skew older.  But even places that cater to younger audiences, like nightclubs and rock concerts, have been closed down.  The venues themselves are in trouble, not having any ability to stage the events that keep them in business.  Will arts organizations like this be forced to deny tickets to older people, “for their own good”?

What will the future look like for these arts groups and venues, when the government holds their future in its hands?  Will a concert hall like the Kimmel Center Verizon Hall in Philadelphia, be able to stay in operation if its audiences are limited to 25% capacity? Will the Philadelphia Orchestra be able to continue under those circumstances?  The Arts are a part of life that makes living worthwhile.  Millions of people all over the world spend time watching and listening to music of all kinds.  What happens when the “music stops”?

What will be the future of the Arts, if a vaccine against the Wuhan Coronavirus takes longer than anticipated to hit the market, or never does?  Will Governments insist that there be no concerts, or performances, or plays for audiences larger than say 50 people?  Will Arts organizations agree to commit suicide, because that is what they will be required to essentially do?

This spring and summer in Seattle, everything has been canceled.  We are very unhappy that the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, the Seattle Chamber Music Festival, the Northwest Chamber Chorus, and the Seattle Symphony, have all not been able to stage one concert.  We are very sad that we will not have the wonderful experience of sitting in Benaroya Recital Hall listening to our favorite musicians play their sublime chamber music.  They have even canceled the outdoor concert scheduled for August!  And the Leavenworth International Accordion Celebration was also canceled, preventing Hubby’s band from performing.  Some groups have been staging recorded, or live-streamed performances, of which the Seattle Symphony was a pioneer.  We get to hear the music, of course, but it’s still not the same experience.

We are very unhappy and depressed about what is going on, but if we are feeling that way, just think of what the musicians and the Festivals are going through right now.  This is their livelihoods, and that hangs in the balance.  People who make their living playing music need an audience, and those audience members need that music.  We are not allowed to make our own decisions about whether to take the risk of being in the same room with the rest of the listeners and performers.  Government has deemed that we not be allowed to attend concerts, because we might be infected.

I have heard of medical “experts” stating that everyone might be forced to wear masks when outside the home, and keep six feet away from everyone else, “for several years”, indicating that this “Emergency” which has lasted nearly seven months now has no endpoint.  Most arts organizations are operating today with the assumption or hope that this situation is temporary.  What if it’s not temporary?  Perhaps orchestra musicians could wear masks during rehearsals and performances; audiences could wear masks all the time, when not eating or drinking; and everyone could try to stay six feet from everyone else (what would be the total audience if that were true?).  But this might spell the end of all choral singing, since singers can’t wear masks, and singing is seen as “super-spreading”.  Except for maybe Early Music groups, singing groups also skew older.

Funny, but you don’t see concerts being canceled during flu season from October to March, in case someone might catch the flu from the person next to them.  Flu kills thousands of people every year, but the world does not stop turning.  I wonder what the ongoing effects of the Wuhan Coronavirus will be on the performing arts, that add such love and excitement to life.  Will the organizations survive?  Will patrons still donate to groups they can’t see in person?  I’m betting that the governments and public health officials, whose livelihoods are never in danger, don’t think of that.  But we do.

Who does NOT suffer from the shutdown of the Washington State economy?

The only ones not suffering are the exalted ones in Big Government, especially in DemocRat-controlled Washington State.  They can wave their magic wands, and put thousands of people out of work in an instant.  Their jobs are not at risk, and they have little care for those who have been cast aside, ostensibly to protect us/them from the evil Chinese Wuhan Coronavirus.

This is a picture of the Snohomish County Executive.  This guy ran unopposed in the last election, which tells you something about the state of the Republican party in Washington (impotent, cowed). Note: I do not vote for anyone running unopposed.

Somers

I wonder what he has been doing while the state economy has been shut down?  Does this look like a drunk to you?  Does to me.

See, I told you so

See, I told you so

I have mentioned many times on my blog how I refuse to give up my single-person, fully-owned automobile, in the face of environmentalist wackos trying to get us out of our cars.  My car is my Liberty.  Any time I want to go somewhere, as long as my car is working well (99.99% of the time), and has gas in the tank (100% of the time), I can just hop in the car and go.

Now, what about all those good little sheeple, city-dwellers who, in the name of “saving the planet”, gave up their cars, and take the bus, or the train, or walked, to work and everywhere else they needed to go?  What do they now do, when public transit is shut down in the face of a rampant viral disease epidemic? How do they now get around, when their only modes of transportation are not available?  Do they call Mommy and ask for a ride?  Do they impose on their friends who might have a car?

I guess there might just be disadvantages to giving up your personally-owned transportation.  When you have to depend on the government to take you where you need to go, you’d better have a backup plan, because government is sometimes unreliable.  Unlike your own car, which is always available for your use.

To all you commuters on Public Transportation…

To all you commuters on Public Transportation…

Beware of relying too much on the Government Transportation (bus, train) to get you to work.  Be careful of selling your car, and trying to “save the planet” by using mass transportation.  This is what happens:

DC Workers Brace For Nightmare Commute as Metro Shuts Down for Emergency Inspection

The Powers That Be in the state of Washington are getting together to “solve” the congestion mess in the Seattle area, and the big “cure” will be getting you out of your car, and into Government Transportation.  They should pay attention to this, as they expand the boondoggle Light Rail.

Update to Coining a new Phrase- “Going Hillsdale” AND “Going AEI”

Central Hall, Hillsdale College

You are probably aware that I am a big supporter of Hillsdale College in Michigan.  And that one of their main claims to fame is that they do not accept one red cent of government money; that enables them to teach the liberal arts exactly the way those arts should be taught.  Hillsdale’s refusal to accept any funds from ANY level of government means that they must do extra fund-raising so that their students can have financial aid for their education.  And I just now made the connection to my own decision to accept no Social Security or Medicare money from the government that increasingly attempts to control every aspect of citizens’ lives.  This also applies to how I purchase prescription drugs, outside of the pharmacy benefit that comes with my insurance.  I purchase ALL of my medicine with my own money, so my doctors and I, not some insurance bean-counter, determine what I take and how many I buy.

Update: I also just realized that the American Enterprise Institute in Washington DC, a conservative think-tank that promotes and studies free people and free markets, also accepts no government money.  So that title changes yet again!

So, this leads me to change the title of my post from January of 2013.  It should now read, “Going Hillsdale and AEI”, No Social Security or Medicare for Me”.

Dear readers, give this some thought.  How much of your life does the government control, due to money (earned by other taxpayers) redistributed to you?

What Obama Hath Wrought-is there ANY part of the Federal Government that is NOT Corrupted?

What Obama Hath Wrought-is there ANY part of the Federal Government that is NOT Corrupted?

Sigh…Have you noticed lately the increasing rate of government scandals coming to light?  I have given it much thought, and it seems to me that, since Obama and his minions took power, nearly every part of the huge (and expanding by leaps and bounds) federal government has been corrupted in some way by the Democrats, who seem intent upon putting every American citizen in a straitjacket, reducing our freedom of movement in every single facet of life.  Along with their boot-lickers in what used to be the Press (now just a propaganda arm of the State), this administration has ruined nearly everything it has touched.  And there are two more years left!

Starting with things here at home:

Early on, there were the many bankruptcies of “green energy” companies propped up with our taxpayer dollars, such as Solyndra

and A123 Systems.  And then, the Obama EPA’s various scandals, including the War On Coal .  Last year, there was the scandal at the Veterans Administration, where the medical care system (100% government run) was found to be hazardous to the health of our retired warriors.

There is the continuing saga of Obamacare, the federal government’s effort to take over and control over 6% of the US economy, starting the world’s best, most-advanced medical care system on the road to socialized medicine, with its constrained budgets, meddling in doctor-patient relationships, huge cost increases (affordable? no!), and rationed care.  Plus, millions of Americans LOST their medical-care insurance, when the liar-in-chief stressed over and over again that if they liked their policy they could keep their policy.

How about the  president’s “recess appointments” to the National Labor Relations Board, which were struck down by the Supreme Court.

Now, the Internal Revenue Service  IRS

has been made into a political organization, auditing the president’s and the Democrats’ political enemies, and harassing conservative organizations seeking tax-exempt status.  The 2012 election result might have been different if this scandal had come to light sooner.  No one is safe-anger a Democrat, and they destroy you (yes, it’s been done).

Of course, the biggie is the president’s “executive action” which gave millions of ILLEGAL immigrants the right to stay in this country, and receive government benefits.  With a stroke of his pen, Obama has attempted to override the laws and Constitution of this country, in a blatant effort to instantly create millions of new, dependent, Democrat voters.  Oh, and managed to introduce hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrant children, who brought strange new diseases with them, and perhaps re-introduced a disease (measles) which had previously been eradicated!

Just last week, the Democrat-dominated Federal Communications Commission acceded to the demands of Obama to regulate the Internet like Ma Bell (yes, under Title II of the Telecommunications Act of 1934).  Please notice all the taxes and fees on your electric bill, because they will soon be coming to your Internet Service bill.

And on the foreign “policy” front, let’s count the ways:

Benghazi, where four American Citizens were allowed to die at the hands of Islamist Terrorists, while the administration blamed it on a stupid YouTube video.

The rise of the terrorist group called Islamic State.

The world watches as they take over huge swathes of Syria, then entire towns in Iraq, where Obama withdrew American troops and declared victory.  The horrified public watches videos put out by this group, showing the mass beheadings of Egyptian Christians, and one-by-one American journalists and missionaries.  The government of Yemen falls to Islamists.  Gaza and the West Bank lob rockets into Israel on a daily basis.  Terrorists murder journalists of a satirical French magazine, in their office in broad daylight; then proceed to a Kosher market and shoot Jewish shoppers.  And the US president does not attend the rally in support of the victims.  Pathetic.

The North Koreans test long-range missiles, for their nuclear bombs they already have.  And the Obama Administration does its level best to “negotiate” a nuclear agreement with Iran, while basically giving the Terrorists of Tehran whatever they want.  Note to Kerry: in a true negotiation, both parties have to give up something.  Israel’s Prime Minister is invited to give an address to Congress, to remind us all that their country’s survival is at stake-Tehran has stated plainly that their goal is to wipe Israel off the map.  And the sleazy Democrats boycott the speech.

And just this week, it comes out that Hillary Clinton, while she was Secretary of State, used a personal email account for ALL her State business, which directly violates the law.  It is coming out now that she was able to delete email at will, and also have her aides do so.  So it will now be virtually impossible for congressional investigators to find out what kind of nefarious dealings might have taken place in the State Department on her watch.

In summary, it now appears to me that the Rule of Law in the United States of America has given way to the Founders’ worst nightmare, the Rule of Men (and women).  No law can stand when the government flouts the law and the Constitution at every turn.  The Federal government has turned into government “OF THE EXECUTIVE, BY THE BUREAUCRACY, FOR THE CRONIES”, and the People suffer.  And both parties in Congress have let this happen.  I fear that this country is in for many years of strife, turmoil, and pain for most Americans.

Rats! I WANTED them to shut down the government!

shutgovtDuring the tense negotiations in DC a while ago, where the D’s and R’s “negotiated” (scare quotes intended) a spending bill to keep the sainted government running for yet another fiscal year, I was rooting for the R’s to simply say NO.  I want them to shut down the government, since much of it is totally wasteful anyway.  I wanted them to propose and pass in the R-controlled House a couple of bills to fund the very most important parts of government, and wait for OTL to veto it.  Ds shut down the government!  OTL, the D president, vetoes funds for continuing the really important parts of government, because the petulant baby who is beholden to Wall Street and Environmentalists didn’t get his lollipop slush funds.  So the same crap that’s been going on for the last six years, with really important additions like amnesty for millions of illegal intruders into our country, get funded again.

It major pisses me off that the establishment that runs the R party thinks that WE, their BASE, are the enemy, instead of the real enemy, the Ds.  They expend untold quantities of energy and consultant fees thinking up ways to defeat US, instead of responding in kind to those who wish our country ill and continually diss our allies while cozying up to our sworn enemies (Fidel, we really love ya!).  Hey, Boehner and Graham, you need to cater to your base, and bring the fight to the traitors on the other side of the aisle.  No more limp-wristed letters to the IRS head, politely asking for emails.  Issue subpoenas!  Make them testify under oath, and get charged with contempt of Congress.  We are sick and tired of getting squished by our own party!  De-fund Immigration, Planned Parenthood, Education, and EPA.  Speak up for the people who really make this country work!

As We Count Down to Veterans Day..I am ashamed of our Government

I wonder if anyone else has been following the prolonged news story about the US Marine who accidentally strayed into Mexico, and was held in a Mexican jail for over 200 days.  This was an honorable member of the US Marines, for heaven’s sake!  So, what did our (no longer) esteemed Federal Government do to get him back?  <crickets>  Absolutely Nothing!  You never heard one word from our Ambassador to Mexico, Anthony Wayne, did you?  He is the “outgoing” ambassador, so this issue probably wasn’t at the top of his agenda.  And did you ever read a story in any of the “mainstream” media about Sgt. Andrew Tahmooresi, and his ordeal in the Mexican prison?  You did not!  So a member of the US military was left to rot in a Mexican prison, with virtually no support from his own government.  This is despicable behavior on the part of the OTL administration, and truly reflects the regard the government in DC holds for its own citizens in general, and our military in particular.

Our government was happy to exchange Islamo-fascist militants from Guantanamo Bay for an American deserter in Afghanistan.  They are happy to release those same enemies, knowing they will return to the battlefield to murder Americans and others.  But they refuse to negotiate, or help secure the release of an honorable American soldier, just barely south of our porous southern border.  Sure, let’s just invite millions of illegal immigrants from Mexico and Central America to become US legal residents (and Democrat voters).  But let’s abandon our own citizens when they are held unjustly.  You readers out there, if you think that the government you elected is looking out for your welfare, you are sorely mistaken.
