Scenes from the backyard

We have had a stretch of pleasant weather lately, and I have spent some time in the yard, refilling the bird feeders and standing around watching and listening. Here are some of the highlights. Fluffy, the Japanese Maple tree Downy Woodpecker on suet feeder Also notice the solitary yellow flower. A coworker gave me the …

That flicker really wanted the hot-pepper suet!

Get the contortions this bird had to go through to eat our fine hot-pepper suet! The big suet feeder with the tail-rest holds ordinary suet, but our flicker went for the good stuff. https://videopress.com/v/L3384TIW?resizeToParent=true&cover=true&preloadContent=metadata&useAverageColor=true Contortions! I buy the suet at our local Wild Birds Unlimited store, and we sure go through a lot of it. …

Backyard visitors. It’s Woodpecker Day!

It’s Saturday, and look who showed up in our yard. https://videopress.com/v/kCBWd6Yi?resizeToParent=true&cover=true&preloadContent=metadata&useAverageColor=true He’s a Downy Woodpecker. Apologizing for the background music, courtesy of The Lady Kikyo, who was watching too. See who also came for the yummy suet! Our Northern Flicker. He’s posing for the camera

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #326: This Made Me Smile

Smiles are one thing we need a lot more of these days. It's easy to be serious, with all the bad news out there, but I do try to keep my eyes open for fun things. On our trip to Colorado in 2022, we stopped in Rock Springs, Wyoming for dinner. We ate at a …

Thanksgiving isn’t just for the Humans…Birds get some too

At least, in our backyard they do.  On Thursday, while waiting for our roast to cook, I sat at the kitchen table and watched our feathered friends in the yard.  We had both kinds of Chickadees (Black-capped and Chestnut-backed), Red-shafted Flickers, Juncos, Varied Thrushes, and Song Sparrows. The Flickers are very skittish, and fly away …

Snow came. So did the chickadees.

This morning over breakfast, I looked out the glass door to the backyard, and spotted a couple of our chickadees taking advantage of the suet feeder.  The one on the left is a Chestnut-backed Chickadee; the one on the right is a Black-capped Chickadee. I also managed to capture the one on the left fluttering …

Sunday Stills: Takin’ it Easy with my #Feathered Friends

I will freely admit that our yard isn't quite as enticing (or as large) as Terri's is for birds, due to our many squirrels.  We have one seed-feeder that's squirrel-proof, and two suet feeders.  One suet feeder that would be easy for squirrels to get at, is always filled with hot-pepper suet, which the birds …

CFFC: Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Birds

And Cee didn't even ask me what this week's subject should be!  My readers and followers will know that one of my favorite activities is taking video and still photos of all the variety of birds that visit my backyard suet and seed feeders.  In all seasons, and through all kinds of weather, my trusty …

Birds-like you see every day…but different

Wherever I go, I watch for birds.  Even in my back yard, I love watching our birds at the feeder.  Normally, juncos are ground-feeders, but ours just love hogging the feeder, watching for chickadees and nuthatches who might want to get in. This is a junco and our song sparrow vying for the preferred station …
