October is Black Cat Awareness Month (Halloween anyone?)

So it would be just the time to have some black cat fun and raise awareness that black cats are definitely NOT bad luck in any way. They are sometimes neglected at the shelter, due to superstitions that should be put to bed once and for all. In fact, when I open my bedroom door every morning to go downstairs for breakfast, the very first thing I see is a black cat.

These are my own black cat, The Lady Kikyo, who we adopted in 2010 from a shelter. She is my third black cat, and we just love her. Her coat is shiny, and soft as a mink. She has been only good luck.

Since I joined Twitter in 2022, I have followed many kitties and their owners. Here are some of what I call my “internet cats” who are black.

Meet Rolf, the University of Warwick Campus Cat ambassador

Rolf and his human servants wander around the campus meeting students and faculty. He does a Rolf Report every day. I just added the first post on Thursday, since it is just precious, and shows Rolf’s sense of humor.

These handsome guys live in England too. They have some fun escapades.

Chonk is a chunk of a cat!

Now, for some black cats in paintings, cartoons, and other media.

My fave cartoon black cat, Jiji, the familiar of young witch Kiki. He speaks with a Brooklyn accent! Kiki’s Delivery Service movie.

So you can see that black cats can be your best friend. Adopt one (or two) today!

At one point I had 3 black cats. when they slept together it was a mass of black with 6 green eyes. Sadly they are all passed. But I have one new one, who is apparently half cat and half bowling ball.

My Black Cat Theory: sweet natures have been bred into them over the centuries: they had to ingratiate themselves to caring humans. Only the sweet survived. We are on black cat #3 (Bouncer) and it will be forever black cats for us (which, of course, does not rule out other cats!).

    1. My mother hated cats, so I decided that when I moved out on my own, the first thing I would do is adopt a cat to keep her away. When I went away to grad school and moved into an apartment with my boyfriend we were offered a free kitten from his coworker. She was black and we named her Flash. When we moved back home to Seattle, she did her duty, keeping the wicked witch away.
