I spend a lot of time alone these days, and I have no problem with that. I get up early, long before my husband, and get ready to go to work. But first, I have to satisfy the furry animal who waits outside the bedroom door, meowing for her breakfast.
In the evenings, when Hubby is at his athletic club playing squash, I engage in my favorite activity, reading. It seems like every available surface in our house is overflowing with books. For a while, I tried getting books out of the local library, but soon discovered that, as far as fiction goes, they tend to have the newest books, and not a lot of older ones. So now I’m back to buying them; my husband is worse than I am, coming home with new books every week. This is just a small sample of the books in our bedroom.
The books on the shelf in the right photo are stored two-deep. I always have at least four on my bedside table too, with large-format illustrated Harry Potter editions on the floor.
When I am alone on summer evenings, I like to go down to Silver Lake with a picnic dinner, watch the ducks and the people, and take photos with my phone.
The park on the west side of the lake is always crowded with kids, dogs, ducks, and kayaks.
In 2019, I took a long weekend by myself and drove over to the Olympic Peninsula. I stayed a couple of nights in Sequim, where I walked down to the Dungeness Spit National Wildlife Refuge.
The foggy beach muffled the sound of the waves, which was very soothing. This is one of my favorite places close to home, and we go there often. On a spring day, I was very nearly alone on the beach.

Does your husband build at all? Get him to put up some more bookshelves! My husband built an entire wall in our bedroom and another entire wall in his office to hold our 1,000 or so books. It isn’t fancy. He just bought a bunch of 1×12 wood and wall brackets.
You certainly use your alone time well! I have stopped buying books – we cannot fill the house more. We have a very good library, so I manage!
