With the advent of smart electricity metering (where the government essentially controls your power use from a central location), more localities are starting to charge more for electricity use at peak hours, normally 4:00-9:00PM, when people get home from work. Looking at the big picture, this might be a disincentive for work. You work, and do things like cooking and laundry in the evenings, you pay more for power. In Leftist places like California, it might be a whole lot more.
But if you look at it slightly differently, it might be an incentive that the Left has been discouraging for decades. Maybe those huge power bills might be an incentive for some women to decide to quit their jobs and stay home to raise their children. By doing this, they save a lot of money. They get rid of high child-care bills, and high electricity bills too, by doing the laundry and cooking during the day when prices are lower. Yes, they lose their pay from their jobs, but the gains are potentially much greater, watching their children grow to successful adulthood, and maybe home-schooling them too. The Left hates traditional families who are harder to make dependent on government.
I must admit that is not a perspective I had thought of before, but it is one to at least give us rubes out in the hinterlands some hope. The last eight years, especially, have pushed me way down the road toward being a cynical curmudgeon, particularly where anything I’m told by any person “in authority” is concerned. It would be nice to think that this fairly obvious power-grab (heh, no pun intended) might, in the long run, blow up in the faces of TPTB.
