Today, my online friend Cynical Publius, responded to the post below.
This is CP’s response to that post on the Woke College.
IMO, closing the Naval War College (and the other Service and Joint war colleges) it is not the answer.
The answer is this:
- Fire all civilian faculty, other than those required for extremely technical, apolitical areas like engineering.
- Stop having permanent military faculty.
- Stop seeking accreditation like civilian universities. Yes, that means the war colleges will cease granting master’s degrees. Good. Such degrees have zero bearing on warfighting.
- Stop breeding interagency students from State, Commerce, etc. Such practice does not make those GS civilians more like warfighters–instead it makes uniformed officers more like GS civilians.
- Cease allowing civilian suits as the uniform of the day. Dress uniform every day for every military student.
- Service as war college faculty should be recognized as a premier assignment. Staff the faculty with O-6s who have had a successful tactical command and are highly likely to become an O-7. Put them on one year tours. Build the curriculum so it can be easily taught by someone who is there only for one year.
- Reshape the curriculum so it focuses 90% on the “M” in the DIME-FIL. The curriculum needs to build warfighters who think strategically, not “strategists” who are more concerned with diplomacy than closing with and destroying America’s enemies.
- Eliminate all curriculum that disguises wokeness as being a military matter. For example, “climate change as a crucial element of national power.”
- Ensure that there is a rotating, supervisory board of governors for each war college that consists solely of recently retired, apolitical O-6s who have conclusively demonstrated tactical and operational success on the battlefield and have never once dabbled in civilian politics at any level. Retired flag officers should not be allowed to sit on this board.
Easy peasy. Problem solved.
I think his prescription is very good, and would accomplish what is necessary to make the Naval War College what it used to be, a way to teach Naval Officers the best new approaches to War-Fighting, not to inculcate them with Political Correctness. Barack Obama was perhaps the worst Commander-in-Chief that America has ever seen, and the sooner ALL his influence is expunged, the better.
