Actually, it’s not too difficult for me to choose my five best-ever photos. I’m not a professional photographer, and I am amazed at the excellent quality I can get from my iPhone camera! Before I got my first smart phone for my 70th birthday, I used to poo-poo all the people who were holding up their phones to get pictures of places and events. That totally stopped once I saw for myself what a smart-phone can do. That also made me go away from getting the cheapest phone, to upgrading to the one with the best camera! When Apple announces its new devices every year, I always look for what changes they have in store for the iPhone and its camera.

Anyway, in honor of the one-month anniversary of the death of our beloved black cat, Lady Kikyo, my first “best” photo is the picture I took of her on her bedroom window perch. She could look out the window at the second story and see all the birds flying around our yard. I think this photo, one of the thousands I took of her in her 15-year life with us, most captures her regal quality.

The light shining from the window captured her sleek, black coat. It couldn’t capture its softness, however-she was as soft as a little mink. We miss her every minute of every waking hour.

This next photo is one that I still marvel at, taken at night at the Everett Marina, where we had dad dinner at a local restaurant. The air was cold and crisp, not a cloud in the sky, and I rested the phone on the concrete marina wall for steadiness. Only when I got it uploaded to my computer did I notice the stars in the sky, and the Big Dipper.

There was not a breath of wind, and the surface of the water perfectly reflected the boats at the marina.

More mundanely, I have found a favorite subject for photos is the food displays at our local Asian grocery store, Uwajimaya. Always having my phone at the ready, I can capture the beauty in a display of ordinary fruits and vegetables. However, I really like this one best, and it’s not food at all, but intricately made Japanese dolls, on display during a festival every year. It’s a wonder, how the makers get every possible person at a Japanese Court, with their lifelike costumes and flower arrangements.

The intricate costumes and vehicles are amazing!

Snow is another of my favorite subjects, and I’m always out in the yard when we get any, capturing the furniture and birdbath with a coating of white. This photo from 2011 was taken right outside my front door. There was absolute silence in the neighborhood, even from the busy street a couple of blocks away. You can almost hear the silence.

My last one is a rare “people” photo. This is a group of children outside a specialty ice cream shop in Leavenworth, around the International Accordion Celebration in June. Perfect Summer shot.

The shop is on the main drag, and during the Accordion Celebration there is always music at the Gazebo a short distance away.
