Our State of Washington has been ruled for decades by Democrats, mostly elected by the voters (or non-voters) of Seattle, whose population outnumbers the rest of the state. In the last 20 or so years, a new phenomenon has arisen that has basically consigned conservatives in Western Washington to minority status, and that is the rise of social media, and search engines like Google, which enabled the average person to look up previously hard-to-find information on just about anyone.
Social media also allowed users to come together in groups, and all concentrate on one user or organization, and mass-report or respond to their “tweets” on Twitter or posts on social sites like Facebook, Instagram, or MySpace. Those sites and other similar places tended to be owned and staffed by young techies, who by affinity were mostly on the Left in political orientation (the taking over of public education by leftist teachers unions contributed to this uniformity of thought). So many conditions happening all at the same time led to those young techies becoming much more powerful than they had ever been, with the newfound ability to direct their ire at specific people and organizations and affect those entities in real life.
I am a member of Ricochet.com, and I remember hearing from multiple other members that their Facebook posts were often “flamed” by many other members (flaming is an angry response to a simple post, often by many others), and flagged by “trust and safety” moderators. People reported that even their own family members responded angrily and profanely to their posts and messages. I used to subscribe to Kim Komando’s newsletters, and was mildly alarmed to hear of the continual Facebook scams that she reported on daily. This ensured that I never joined Facebook, and that turned out to be a good decision. And this kind of leftist online thuggery has even invaded sites and groups that should have little to no reason for political attacks, including gamer sites, knitting sites, and even gardening sites. No corner of the internet is safe from invasion any longer.
I also remember, in my years of listening to Rush Limbaugh, how many times he spoke about the internet mobs that made whatever online presence he had miserable. One thing he did that was put his investigative team on it, and they found that the majority of so-called members of leftist organizations were actually “bots” and behind them were just a few people. The internet, then, has enabled a few people to control the online (and real) lives of many.
The first instance that I can remember of a hostile internet mob was the case of Brendan Eich, who was offered the CEO position at Mozilla Corp, who are responsible for the Firefox browser. He donated to a ballot measure in California that was against homosexual “marriage”, and the Internet Mob doxed him (released all his personal information like home address) and, eventually, led Mozilla to rescind its CEO offer. The Mob flexed its newfound power to, literally, destroy its “enemies”. This sort of online rioting has now become almost routine on the Left, with very little pushback from victims.
Knowing that the Mob will, through online research, find every little word you have ever published, online and offline; accuse you of “crimes” in your past that were only small indiscretions that everyone commits at one time or another; and release every bit of personal information about you, including your home address, employer, children’s names, ages, and schools, spouse’s name and employer; is it any wonder that conservatives are leery of running for political office? They know that, once they announce their intention to run for office, the Left will mobilize to destroy their lives, not just oppose them for office.
The problem is that the Left has no scruples about doing this kind of online destruction, but we on the Right do have such scruples, and most Republican politicians state that we “don’t want to go down to their level” to fight them. Well, that is going to have to change if we are ever going to defeat the Left which is bent upon the introduction of Marxism to take over America. We can no longer sit in our comfortable chairs and wax eloquent about “muh principles” that our Congressmen and Senators no longer adhere to. First, we must open our eyes, and admit that what the Left is doing is Warfare, not just Politics. We have to come up with a plan of attack, so conservative business leaders and other non-politicians, will agree to run for office to really represent our interests. No conservative will agree to have his entire life brought out and ruined if he decides to run for office. Even local school-board candidates are being subjected to this disgusting treatment by leftist online thugs.
President Donald Trump has been the victim of every kind of online and offline thuggery that the left can come up with, and he has survived and won, mostly because he is very wealthy and can afford measures to counter the mob, as well as being the “Energizer Bunny” who can operate on very little sleep. Most others are not, and must have help from those of us in the tech industry and other smart people, to devise plans to protect personal information, raise funds for campaigns that will be under constant bombardment, and find ways to reach the public with our message of liberty and prosperity. If we can’t come up with plans to counter Leftist Lawfare and other evil machinations, then we ourselves will have lost our country due to principles which we refuse to defend. Entirely defensive warfare never works. We need go on Offense, and we need to do it right now.
