There has been some attention paid today, to the actions of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. They have, in the past few years, added some conditions to their awards process for giving out the Academy Awards. Those conditions have not helped them make better of more popular movies. Below is a good explanation of what happened, and some new news out of the Academy.
A decade ago, Hollywood decided it would no longer honor films based purely on merit but also on the diversity of the cast and production team. In 2020, they formally tied Best Picture to diversity.
The Academy expanded its membership by roughly 40% in a decade through an explicit push to diversify its ranks.
The Oscars will proudly tell you that last year’s invitees were:
41% women
45% people of color
55% from overseasFor 88 years, the Academy selected members and honored achievement based on merit. For the last 10 years, invitees went from 112 per year to over 900 to meet diversity targets.
This devalues and dishonors great American films and creates perverse incentives that lead studios to inflate diversity numbers in hopes of recognition by their woke peers.
Meritocracy must be restored to film.
Here are some of the good comments on the above post.
Diversity just means fewer white people and worse outcomes. Every. Single. Time.
I like the new Oscar rules. They provide me with:
- a list of movies to never watch
- a list of actors/actresses to avoid on TV or stage
- a list of companies to never buy from
Overall Oscar nominations and awards save me from wasting my time.
This is not the only reason, but it is a huge reason people don’t go to the movies any longer. The product coming out of Hollywood is garbage. Awful scripts, weak acting, and clearly DEI themes running through most of the storylines. No one is interested in awful stories with weak plots preaching to us about the inherent evil that lies within us and the purity and nobility of the approved classes.
Let me remind you, please
It is a fair question to ask why race-swapping in modern entertainment appears disproportionately aimed at traditionally European or white historical and fictional characters while the reverse is generally treated as unacceptable. People notice patterns. If ethnicity is supposedly irrelevant to storytelling, then audiences naturally ask why changing certain characters is celebrated as “representation,” while changing others would instantly trigger outrage. Part of the frustration is that many viewers do not feel this is organic creativity. They see studios repeatedly modifying existing legacy characters instead of creating entirely new iconic characters with strong writing and original identities. Most audiences care far more about excellent storytelling, authenticity, consistency, and respect for source material than ideological messaging. When entertainment companies ignore that reality and then label criticism as immoral, racist, or hateful… they create even more backlash. People are not required to automatically applaud every creative decision simply because it is framed as “progress.”
This is a good response on this issue.
And, finally some fun humor.
I have stated more than once that, the way you will know when racism has finally been 100% conquered is when a Broadway director can mount Raisin in the Sun with an all-white cast.
These days, it’s the Left which contains ALL the -isms that they have been promoting for 60 years. They were the party of Slavery and Jim Crow, and it never left their psyche.
