Sama Hoole is a Brit who posts on nutrition, farming, and his “hobby-horse”, the value of ruminant animals for the land and for the people. I have found all of his posts to be very interesting and helpful. Here are a couple of recent ones.
The ruminant family, and the one job each member does that nothing else can:
Cattle: turn a wet hillside into milk and beef, and build the soil while they stand on it
Sheep: grow a fireproof, compostable fibre every year on grass and rain
Goats: eat the scrub, bramble and invasive weed that chokes everything else out
Water buffalo: make the milk that becomes real mozzarella, on marshland a cow would sink in
Yak: live and give milk at altitudes that would kill any lowland animal
Reindeer: feed and clothe whole peoples above the Arctic Circle, on lichen and moss
Bison: engineer an entire prairie ecosystem simply by grazing across it
Seven animals, one gift each, none of them replaceable by a machine or a crop.
Every one of them classed, this decade, as a liability.

Pink Himalayan salt. Ancient, pure, mineral rich, hand mined from ranges untouched by the modern world. A quick word before you grind it over your eggs:
- It is rock salt, about 98 percent sodium chloride, chemically a table salt with the same sodium as the cheap white stuff in the blue drum
- The pink you are paying extra for is rust. Trace iron oxide in the crystal, which is to say the dirt is the entire selling point
- The fabled 84 minerals are real and gloriously useless. To get a single day’s potassium out of them you would need to eat around three and a half pounds of the salt, roughly the amount that would kill a grown adult several times over first
- A fair few of those 84 celebrated minerals are ones no marketer would ever read out by name, the odd trace of lead and cadmium tucked in among the wholesome glitter
- It is hauled out of a mine in Punjab, Pakistan, about 300 kilometres from anything you could honestly call a Himalaya
- Sold, gram for gram, at many times the price of the near identical rock salt they throw down to grit the roads in January
The mountain is a marketing department. You are paying a premium for rust with a better postcode.
So, did you learn something new today? I sure did, and I follow Sama so I expect to learn a lot more going forward. He makes the carnivore diet sound like a miracle cure.
Finally, the explanation. Sama and a commenter get the whole story.
Spinach isn’t a superfood.
It has one of the highest concentrations of oxalates, which is poisonous to the mitochondria, and lead to kidney stones.
It has 80 times more nitrates than hot dogs.
It contains plenty of salicylates and saponins that can irritate and damage your digestive tract.
And the much-hyped calcium and iron content will never get absorbed into your body due to antinutrients like the aforementioned oxalates, as well as phytates and tannins.
Popeye sold us a lie.
Further , we do not contain a ruminant stomach , we don’t have the enzyme cellulase to break down the cell wall of spinach, we don’t regurgitate it and chew it more only to swallow it again as is necessary herbivores to digest it, and all the benefits of spinach can be consumed in grass fed red meat and raw grass fed dairy
