A VERY popular phrase used by Republicans running for office is “Democrat Failed Policy.” By this, they mean the urban devastation, drug overdoses, failing schools, exodus of productive people and businesses, and blighted neighborhoods found in mostly black Democrat-governed metropolitan areas. The Republican candidates always refer to those effects as “failed policies,” but are the policies really failures? Has anyone stopped to think that the policies themselves might just be successful for Democrats, and not failures?
In order to answer that, you need to think about what it is that Democrat politicians really want, for all their power. The two big motivators for Democrats are Money and Power. Black elected officials in many leftist cities are, themselves, quite wealthy, with big houses, bigger bank accounts, and nearly total control of their cities. Black-run cities have most of their government positions filled by fellow blacks. Those government officials tend to be paid high salaries with generous pensions. In states like Illinois, which Democrats have run for the better part of a century, the Democrats in the State Legislature pushed through a constitutional amendment protecting the pensions of all government employees from being reduced, in perpetuity. If a city is short on money to put aside for public employee pensions, ALL other expenditures must be cut, since the public employee pensions are sacrosanct.
Now, it is well-known that public employee unions, most of which are populated by Democrats, are extremely powerful, and sometimes dictate budgets and policy to the public officials with whom they “negotiate” contracts. [please note that public employee unions and public officials are on the same side of the bargaining table, so they don’t really negotiate, just agree]. Often the Union bosses get contracts for their employees that ensure that the public’s taxes are raised every year, which is no problem for them since their pay and benefits always keep up.
I found an interesting video of Gary, Indiana, a formerly-prosperous steel town, that is and was governed by Democrats. The steel plants mostly closed, due to very high (union labor) costs, and the town was left in a parlous state.
Please do play this video.
So, given that Democrat policies actually lead to destruction of entire towns, their policies look like failures. However, to the Democrats themselves, maybe not. They have kept their people weak and dependent, with very high levels of welfare, Medicaid, crumbling infrastructure, and crime. However, the Democrats themselves are the ones doling out all that welfare, food aid, and health care to the residents who are left. They themselves live in what nice neighborhoods are left, and send their kids to private schools so they don’t have to worry about poor educational outcomes. The teachers unions are so powerful that education reform is virtually impossible in those places. Another win for Democrats.
Most Republican politicians refer to immigration policy as a huge failure for Democrats, but again you have to ask what Democrats see as their needs from such policy. Open borders may be a hardship to those living in inner cities, where illegal aliens outbid them for jobs, get cheap housing, and commit crimes with few consequences. The Democrats also cheat heavily in local and state elections, so their grip on power is maintained, even when the public is angry with their policies. Democrats see the perpetrators of crime as the real victims, so they coddle repeat offenders who are often released with no bail and go on to commit more crimes. Illegal aliens depend on Democrat officials to keep them in the country, and even let them vote (for Democrats, of course). Winner for Democrats!
So, maybe we should stop talking about Democrat “failed policy” which is getting to be a very tired phrase that most people tune out. Let’s start talking about the Successful Horrible Democrat Policies, and start laying out our own Better Policies. State what we are FOR, and maybe people will start voting Republican again.
